Article ' That'll Teach You....'
I have always hated lessons. Basically, I hate
hanging around. But in the last two years, I've discovered lessons
can actually be fun and helpfull.
My change of heart started with Tom Saxlund, a founder of the New
Generation Ski School, which now operates in four French resorts.
I joined a lesson he was giving on a reader trip DMS&S ran to
Courchevel. First, he asked us all to talk to a fellow group member
on the way up the gondola and decide how we'd like this lesson to
transform our skiing (We all opted to ski better off-piste crud).
Then he taught us to pair up and take turns following closely in
the tracks of a partner on the piste, with them changing speed and
turn shape at will - great fun and great practice. Then we went
into the crud and each of us got individual advice without seeming
to wait around. Indeed the tip I remember best was Tom telling me
to 'keep going, don't stop, just link turn after turn'. It did make
skiing crud much easier.... So keep going is what I do now - which
suits my 'no hanging around' philosophy. |

Article ' Sweet talkin' fun of a teacher man' -
'...it's supposed to be fun,' grinned our impish
instructor as we tried to balance ourselves in the middle of our
feet on the skis. We were concentrating so much on perfecting the
balance that our faces had a grimly determined look. Then Roy cracked
one of his jokes - a pattern that was to continue throughout the
week. As we worked our way down the mountain, falling over, crashing
into each other, or even getting it right, gales of laughter filled
the crisp April morning! |
Metro (London), Nov 7th 2005
In the London Metro's 'Snow Special', New Generation
ski school were praised for leading the change in ski coaching.
The article entitled 'Don't be a ski school dropout', discusses
our coaching techniques.. 'They mix a touchy-feely approach...with
an explanation of the physics of skiing'. |

Daily Mail Ski & Snowboard Mag, October 2005:
"Confidence building in Courchevel ..... 'I
joined a confident intermediate group (level 5) and learnt more
in two days than I have for a long time,' said a 2005 visitor. 'We
had an absolutely brilliant week and our daughter, aged
seven, had fun and progressed well,' said a 2004 reporter. |

(C.Gill & Dave Watts)
New Generation is a British run ski school. We
joined a group lesson with them last year and were very impressed
by their US-style of teaching: they ask students to set their goals
for the lesson on the gondola ride up and then try to help them
achieve them. We nearly all opted for skiing chopped-up, off-piste
snow with style and all felt we had improved a lot by the end of
the morning. We receive rave reviews about them from reporters,
for adults and children alike: 'I joined a confident intermediate
group (LEVEL5) and learnt more in two days than I have for a long
time', ' We had an absolue brilliant week and our daughter, aged
seven, had fun and progressed well.'

The rewards to be gained from just a few lessons
can be the biggest treat of all. One of the most innovative,
English speaking ski schools in Europe is New Generation.

The Times
(October 2002)
Until recently, whenever I was asked which ski
school I could recommend, I always pointed people to North America
for the best instruction and service, but now things have
changed in Europe. One of the first of the new British ski schools
was New Generation, formed in Courchevel 1650. Reports
from readers are universally positive: 'We learnt more in a week
than we had in many years previously', 'Cannot praise the instructors
enough'.
