BASI Level 2 Courses

The BASI Level 2 Exam is a certification assessment for aspiring ski instructors, focusing on both technical skiing abilities and teaching skills.

Preparation includes reviewing course materials, practising skiing, engaging in teaching practice, and attending BASI Level 2 preparation courses if available.

Teaching skills assessment includes maintaining safety, delivering engaging and effective sessions, and setting goals that align with learner needs. Candidates are expected to demonstrate understanding of the Central Theme and visit each stage of TIED, although session review is introduced but not assessed.

Professionalism is a key component, encompassing safety adherence, preparation, communication, attitude, feedback receptiveness, and punctuality. Candidates must follow the Ski-Way Code, complete pre-course learning, and maintain a positive and committed attitude throughout the course.

Candidates should be open to feedback from trainers and peers and engage in self-reflection to improve their performance. Being receptive to change and actively seeking to develop skills is encouraged throughout the course.

In the Piste Long section, candidates must perform cleanly carved turns on a blue piste. The ability to showcase a variety of turn radii is essential, demonstrating versatility and adaptability to different skiing demands. Effective posture, balance, and movements are critical to achieving the desired carving precision.

During the Steeps assessment, candidates must perform linked turns on steep red or black pistes. They should show the ability to control speed safely while maintaining effective posture, balance, and movements. The emphasis is on safely navigating challenging terrains with confidence and precision, with trainer feedback available as needed.

The Freestyle assessment involves skiing switch safely on an easy blue run, maintaining largely parallel skis for at least two-thirds of the turn and smooth transitions. Candidates must perform a small, safe jump with a balanced landing off an appropriate side hit or natural feature. Understanding how to adjust basic posture, balance, and movements to demonstrate basic flatland tricks is also required. Consistency in skiing at safe speeds in beginner freestyle terrain is crucial, with trainer feedback available to enhance performance.

Candidates must have completed the BASI Level 1 qualification, hold a BASI-approved first aid certificate, and completed the BASI online Child Protection module.

The Variables assessment requires candidates to perform rounded, linked turns in a variety of snow conditions on slopes with blue or red steepness. Candidates should display a range of turn radii and maintain effective posture, balance, and movements. Feedback from trainers may be provided to help candidates refine their technique in varying conditions.

In the Bumps section, candidates are required to perform continuous linked, skidded turns in easy bumps. They need to maintain a narrow corridor and a constant speed, using effective posture, balance, and movements. Feedback from trainers may assist in fine-tuning their technique to handle the undulating terrain effectively.
