Learning to snowboard can be challenging, especially during the first few days. While it may be tempting to let friends teach you, it’s best to stick to a professional instructor who can explain things clearly and be patient with you as you learn at your own pace.

Professional instructors have years of experience and tips for dealing with challenges and selecting the right terrain for your ability. Plus, with a professional instructor, you’re less likely to fall or be injured. Remember, lessons are key ingredients to a great first experience on a snowboard.

What to Expect From Your Beginner Snowboard Lesson

You need great snowboarding lessons to go from a beginner to a shredder. Group snowboard lessons are the best option for most people, especially beginners, as they’re divided by skill level, so you’ll be learning alongside other beginners. Your instructor will inspire you and cheer you on throughout the week, sharing their love for snowboarding and the mountains so you can also develop a passion for the sport.

When you arrive for your first lesson, an energetic and friendly instructor will greet you, making you feel at ease and excited about the experience. During a group lesson, you and a few other beginners will spend a few hours each day learning to put on your gear, get up the hill, and slide back down while controlling your speed and direction.

Timeline

  • Meet your instructor at the meeting point
  • Learn how to use your new snowboard equipment and get comfortable with it.
  • Learn proper technique from day one so you don’t build bad habits and stay safe on the mountain.
  • Instruction from a qualified instructor who will inspire you to ride like a pro.
  • An environment where you’ll feel safe and build confidence on your snowboard.
  • Insider knowledge from the instructor who knows the local mountain well. They can share things such as the best pistes for your ability.
  • A friendly, social atmosphere for other first-timers so you can learn at your own pace.
  • And a few laughs (we hope!)
  • Practice new skills
  • Explore new terrain
  • End the lesson at the meeting point

Tips for Beginner Snowboard Lessons

  • Ensure you’ve comfortable boots that fit well and are the right size.
  • Ensure your board is in good condition and serviced (this should be done by the hire shop.
  • Learning a new skill can be tiring, regardless of age or ability. Take breaks, as your legs will tire.
  • Mileage and confidence are key for new snowboarders. So, practice outside your lessons. Start on terrain you feel good on. Then, gradually increase the difficulty. Ensure you have solid foundations. Then, take on new skills and steeper, harder terrain.
  • If something knocks your confidence, try again the next day. Don’t give up. If you’d prefer coaching for one person, we recommend booking a private lesson. You will get more time with the instructor to receive personalised feedback.
