Get to know Matija

Hey there! I’m Matija, though friends often call me Matic, reminiscent of the artist Matisse. My skiing journey started at the age of three, guided by my father on the picturesque slopes of Maribor’s Pohorje mountains in Slovenia. I was deeply involved in FIS competitions until a leg fracture at 18 put a pause on my competitive skiing dreams. Now, skiing is a perfect fusion of passion and profession, allowing me to share the slopes with enthusiastic learners. I’m particularly fond of alpine, freeride, and touring skiing. Some of my most cherished memories come from the 1990s in Tignes, France, where I enjoyed carefree post-season skiing with my ski club and family. Teaching skiing is incredibly rewarding, especially when I get to pass on the joy of the sport to kids who bring boundless energy and fresh perspectives.

When the snow melts, I transition to pursuits like photography, mountain work, and soaking in the vibrant energy of music festivals. I also delight in swimming in rivers and seas, keeping my connection with nature strong. Beyond skiing, my interests include cycling, running, aikido, mountaineering, and dancing. A surprising fact about me is my fluency in Japanese, a skill I developed during my time as a ski instructor in Japan, where I mostly taught Japanese clients. With 20 years of teaching under my belt, I’ve earned qualifications such as ISIA, IVSI, CTT, and Carte pro.
